Digital ID card
Also called: e-Residency card, e-Residency digital ID
The smart card an e-resident uses with a card reader and PIN codes to log in to Estonian e-services and sign documents digitally.
The digital ID card is the smart card issued to every e-resident. With a card reader and the card’s PIN codes, it proves your identity online and creates digital signatures on documents. This is how e-residents register a company in the e-Business Register, sign contracts and file reports without visiting Estonia.
You apply online but collect the card in person at the pickup location you chose in your application, so plan for that trip. Do I need to travel to Estonia to set up a company? explains the options. The card is valid for 5 years (source: politsei.ee, checked 3 Oct 2026) and can’t be extended: to keep using e-Residency, you apply for a new card and collect it in person again.
The e-Residency programme describes the card as a tool for secure online authentication, not physical identification or a travel document. It gives no right to live in Estonia or enter the country. The setup timeline shows where card pickup fits into your plans.
